The City of Moreno Valley obtained a $100,000 donation from Amazon for the City Mayor’s MoVaLEARNS program. This generous donation will fund a full year of the MoVaLEARNS program through the Moreno Valley Community Foundation.

“This incredible donation ensures our successful MoVaLEARNS program continues to provide the opportunity for our students to reach their dreams of getting first-rate education and employment. “I cannot thank Amazon enough for their continued investment in not only these students’ futures but Moreno Valley’s future as well.”

said Dr. Yxstian Gutierrez | Mayor of Moreno Valley

The City of Moreno Valley’s government website details how the program helps students to get higher education.

Through MoVaLEARNS, 50 Moreno Valley residents enrolled in Career and Technical Education classes at Moreno Valley College can receive a monthly stipend for an entire academic semester at MVC, allowing them to focus on school and participate in community service projects.

Solving the Earn vs. Learn Dilemma

The program supports students to get education and also obtain money while doing so. This scholarship will help them exactly solve the problem that generally prevents students from low-income families to skip school.

Currently in its third year, the MoVaLEARNS program helps alleviate the “Earn vs. Learn” dilemma many Moreno Valley residents face—whether to get an education or a job to earn a living. Under the MoVaLEARNS program, students can have both.

Community Engagement by Amazon

“Amazon is incredibly proud to partner with Moreno Valley and MoVaLEARNS to make higher education more accessible and affordable,” said Marie Lloyd, who leads community engagement for Amazon in Southern California.

“At Amazon, we believe in lifelong learning, which is why we pay for our frontline employees — all 750,000 — to get their high school diplomas, GEDs, ESL proficiencies and to attend college. Programs like MoVaLEARNS help eliminate barriers to higher education, support our neighbors in advancing their careers, and improve our communities.”
